Guangzhou Maritime University


     Guangzhou Maritime University (GMU) is a public, provincial, only and independent,full-time maritime university in south China, located in Huangpu, Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong Province. It is the former Guangzhou Marine School (1964 to 1992) and Guangzhou Maritime College (GMC) (1992 to 2013). In 2013, it was upgraded to degree-awarding university by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and changed its name from Guangzhou Maritime College to Guangzhou Maritime Institute (GMI). In March, 2016, its name, was again changed from Guangzhou Maritime Institute to Guangzhou Maritime University in accordance with the instruction of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province.

           GMU has two campuses. The base campus is in the east part of Guangzhou, near the well-known Huangpu Port. The other campus is just opposite the Port and across the Pearl River. Both the picturesque campuses are fully equipped with modern teaching and living facilities, providing the students and staff with excellent condition for living, learning, teaching and doing scientific research.

     Guangzhou Maritime University has 12 schools:School of Navigation,  School of Marine Engineering,School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering,School of Port and Shipping Management,School of Harbor Engineering,School of Computer Science and Information Engineering,School of Shipping Business and Trade,School of Foreign Languages,School of Art and Design,School of Marxism,School of Innovation,School of Continuing Education;2 departments:  Department of Basic Courses,Department of Sports Science,and one Seafarers Training Center.

     Presently, GMU has a teaching staff of 602 and about 13000 full-time students. It enrolls students from 25 provinces or municipalities in China. GMU can offer 25 undergraduate programs, the programs being Navigation Technology, Marine Engineering, Marine Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Logistics Engineering, Harbour Navigable Channel and Coastal Engineering, Communication Engineering, Business English, Ship and Ocean Engineering, Electric and Automation, Computer Science and Technology, Engineering Supervision (Management), Energy Sources and Dynamic Engineering, International Business, Communications Management, Maritime Affairs Management, Electronic Business, Digital Media Art, Civil Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering, Financial Control(Management Through Finance), Mechanical Engineering,Finance,Law and Tourism Management.

       GMU has more than 100 laboratories, the world-leading large ship simulator, the DP laboratory, the Rockwell automation laboratory and the marine engine room automation laboratory being the biggest ones. Besides, GMU is equipped with four practice ships co-operated with China Shipping Co. Ltd, each with a capacity of 60000 tons, one school-run factory and 87 outside-campus practice bases for students carrying out practice. GMU’s six-storey library stores more than 1230,000 books, over 360,000 E-books, and 5293 electronic journals and periodicals. Its eight reading halls offer 1260 seats. So far, GMU has built 10 dormitory buildings, which can house over 15000 full-time students, five cafeterias, three standard track fields, a three-storey gymnasium, a swimming pool, a diving pool, a large pool for lifeboats training and four clubs for students to hold different entertainment activities. In order to keep the pace with modern distance education, GMU has set up its own fast campus internet.

       Guangzhou Maritime University attaches great importance to its education quality. In accordance with the requirements from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and “The Administration Regulations for Seafarers Education and Training of the People’s Republic of China”GMU has established and implemented the Quality Assessment System for seafarers’ Education and Trainingin 1999and obtained in the same year the “Certificate of the Quality Assessment System for Seafarers’ Education & Training in the People’s Republic of China”. This certificate is issued by the Maritime Safety Administration of the People’s Republic of China. Consequently, GMU is one of the few maritime colleges or universities in China that can directly apply for the international seafarer certificates for their cadets. Cadets from GMU can meet all the requirements of STCW and they can work onboard any kinds of ships going world-wide.
      With its unique features in maritime education and training, GMU is developing other relevant disciplines or specialties, and simultaneously looking forward to opportunities for collaboration on education and scientific research with colleges and universities from abroad.
